Story: “Death – the last sleep? No, it is the final awakening” quote by Walter Scott. Just imagine if tomorrow you were to wake up in a world not knowing everything you knew and loved was gone and surrounded by death, to be lost but searching for hope, this is what Rick Grimes had to face and fight through to survive in the world of the dead. As Rick points his gun, this is a moment you decide will Rick take care of you or do you become one of the dead?
Creating: As a massive fan of the comics and television series of The Walking Dead, Rick Grimes was a character I had to capture and create I think a life decision situation photograph with him pointing his weapon at the viewer to let the viewer think what would you do if you were unfortunately bitten by a walker and had to make your last decision of letting Rick take care of you or do you turn? With so many discussions with friends on how we would survive a zombie apocalypse and what weapon would you have, there was the one question that would niggle the back of my mind on if you were to be bitten by a walker what would you do and what would you be thinking at that moment knowing time is running out? By using my own question as inspiration to creating this photograph, just placing Rick in front of me as he pointed his weapon got me thinking on the decision if I was bit by a walker would I do knowing I would have to accept my fate.
Facts: Created by Writer Robert Kirkman and Artist Tony Moore, Rick Grimes would make his first ever appearance in 2003 in the first comic book issue of The Walking Dead and then make his first appearance in 2010 on the 31st October in the series with Andrew Lincoln taking the lead role till his final episode in 2019. When developing the character of Rick Grimes becoming the main leader of a group of survivors in the comic book, Grimes was described as an everyman character who emphasizes moral codes and values. When coming up for the idea of creating a comic book series based on a zombie apocalypse, Kirkman and Moore would create their own comic book following up to George A. Romero’s 1968 film Night of the Living Dead but it was suggested by Image Comics Co-Founder to create their own original story and name it The Walking Dead.
. As the Walking Dead comic book was becoming more popular with fans around the world, when the news hit the fans that a television series of The Walking Dead was to be adapted by film Director and Writer for The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile Frank Darabont, fans were asking who’s going to be playing the role of Rick Grimes? When auditions had started for the role of Rick, originally the first choice by Darabont for the role of Rick was going to be given to actor Thomas Jane who was known for his 2003 role as The Punisher and was in Darabont’s 2017 film The Mist but Jane was involved in other projects. For Darabont’s second choice for the role was Jamie Bamber who played Lee Adama in Battlestar Galactica but didn’t get the role and the role was auditioned by Mark Pellegrino, Stuart Townsend and then by Ethan Embry who actually played Carter in season 6.
. Known for his acting roles in the UK for Teachers, After Life and Love Actually, Andrew Lincoln would audition for the role of Rick Grimes with actor Jon Bernthal for the pilot episode and they would both get the roles they auditioned for and Kirkman felt Lincoln was an amazing find for the role and embodied the characteristics of Rick Grimes. When Lincoln was given the role of Rick, Lincoln had no knowledge to what The Walking Dead was about and wasn’t given a script yet. As Lincoln approached a book store known as Mega City Comics in London, Lincoln was told by the owner of the shop that The Walking Dead “this is our most popular and successful comic, and in my opinion, one of the greatest graphic novels of the last 10 years”. Lincoln knew at this point he was involved in something special and awarding. To get into the role of becoming Rick before the production had started, Lincoln would practice and work on his southern American accent and travel to Atlanta for 3 weeks to being an American.
. Lincolns performance as Rick has given him many nominations and wins for his acting, Lincoln has won the following rewards: IGN Summer Movie Award for best TV Hero 2010, Satellite Award for Best Cast – Television Series 2012, People’s Choice Award for favorite TV Anti-Hero 2014 and Saturn Award for Best Actor on Television 2015 and 2017.
